Empirical Proxies for the Consumption-Wealth Ratio

چکیده
Campbell (1993) has employed a log-linearized approximation to an aggregate budget constraint to show how the ratio of consumption to total (human and non-human) wealth summarizes agents’ expectations concerning both future labor income and future asset returns. A problem with implementing this approach empirically is the unobservability of human wealth. Recently, Lettau and Ludvigson (2001a) have operationalized Campbell’s approach by approximating the log of total wealth with a linear combination of the log of labor income and the log of observable non-human wealth. If valid, this framework implies that the log-levels of consumption, assets, and labor income will be cointegrated. We demonstrate, however, that standard tests fail to reject the hypothesis of no cointegration once one employs measures of consumption, assets, and labor income that are jointly consistent with an underlying budget constraint. We also show that deviations of consumption, assets, and income from an estimated common trend are unable to predict future excess returns on stocks out of sample once theoretically consistent measures are used. ∗Corresponding author. Demand for Medical Care in Urban Areas of Iran : An Empirical Investigation
The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the factors affecting demand for medical care in Iran the population for this study relates to the Medical Care Insurance Organization of Iran. For the sake of conducting the analysis a sample of 4260 individuals are chosen using a fuzzy sampling procedure. The data was then analyzed using a multinomial logit model. The results show that p...
متن کاملA Cross-Sectional Test of Linear Factor Models With Time-Varying Risk Premia
This paper explores the ability of theoretically-based asset pricing models such as the CAPM and the consumption CAPM referred to jointly as the (C)CAPM to explain the cross-section of average stock returns. Unlike many previous empirical tests of the (C)CAPM, we specify the pricing kernel as a conditional linear factor model, as would be expected if risk premia vary over time. Central to our a...
متن کاملDisaggregate Wealth and Aggregate Consumption: an Investigation of Empirical Relationships for the G7*
To date, studies of wealth effects on consumption have mainly used aggregate wealth definitions on a single-country basis. This study seeks to break new ground by analysing disaggregated financial wealth in consumption functions for G7 countries. Contrary to earlier empirical work, we find that illiquid financial wealth (i.e. securities, pensions and mortgage debt) tends to be a more important ...
متن کاملRobust Factor Models with Explanatory Proxies
We provide an econometric analysis for the factor models when the latent factors can be explained partially by several observed explanatory proxies. In financial factor models for instance, the unknown factors can be reasonably well predicted by a few observable proxies, such as the Fama-French factors. In diffusion index forecasts, identified factors are strongly related to several directly me...
متن کاملResurrecting the Wealth Effect on Consumption: Further Analysis and Extension
Abstract: This paper investigates whether various components of wealth affect real consumption asymmetrically through a threshold adjustment model. The empirical findings for the U.S. show that only stock market assets, financial assets including stock market assets, and household net assets exert a practical wealth effect on consumption expenditure. By contrast, financial assets excluding stoc...
